Don't Be Afraid

By Datonye Esther Adjei | July 26 2021

The above picture shows someone with courage despite the waves and poor visibility; so we should not be afraid in the storms of life because we have the promises of God to save us from the storms of life.

Jesus wants us to be peaceful in every situation and assures us that although we may face tribulations, we should be of good cheer, for He has overcome the world. (John 16:33)

Throughout the Bible, we see God encouraging us not to be afraid. The key word for God to win any battle is not to be afraid, because fear brings torment and defeat.

We saw how the twelve spies who were sent to spy the land of Canaan brought fearful news back, and the people became afraid instead of trusting God. Because of that, only Joshua and Caleb, who brought good news to the people, were able to go into the promised land that flowed with milk and honey. (Numbers 13)

Deuteronomy 3:1-6 (Victory over Og of Bashan) 1: “Next we turned and headed for the land of Bashan, where King Og and his entire army attacked us at Edrei.

2: But the Lord told me, ‘Do not be afraid of him, for I have given you victory over Og and his entire army, and I will give you all his land. Treat him just as you treated King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.’ 3: “So the Lord our God handed King Og and all his people over to us, and we killed them all. Not a single person survived.

4: We conquered all sixty of his towns—the entire Argob region in his kingdom of Bashan. Not a single town escaped our conquest.

5: These towns were all fortified with high walls and barred gates. We also took many unwalled villages at the same time.

6: We completely destroyed the kingdom of Bashan, just as we had destroyed King Sihon of Heshbon. We destroyed all the people in every town we conquered—men, women, and children alike.

Before this story, the children of Israel had been wandering in the wilderness for forty years. In order for them to get to their promised land, they had to defeat king Og of Bashan.

Here again we see the Lord instructing Moses, telling him not to be afraid of the giant; that He has already given them the victory over King Og.

Sometimes, even when we know the promises of God, we still are afraid of some things in our lives or outside. This may be because we have been listening to negativity, or because we do not know the promise of God concerning that situation. Then we become paralyzed by fear and lose the battle.

Moses listened to the voice of God not to be afraid of Og, and he related this instruction to the men of war so everyone had a victory mentality that God was on their side, and that their victory was sure.

5 ways to defeat fear and be victorious:

  • Hang out with people who will give you the right advice.

  • Study and meditate on the word of God daily.

  • Find the right Bible verses for the situation.

  • Say the verses aloud to yourself until it becomes a part of you.

  • Engage in prayers of agreement with fellow believers.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). So feed your mind with the word of God, because with faith you will always be victorious.
